Emily Toy and Amelia Garvey will take a trip down memory lane by reviewing last year’s Women’s Amateur Championship final in another special feature from The R&A.
After a focus on The Amateur Championship last week, the spotlight now will shine on the women’s equivalent across The R&A’s social media platforms this week.
In a feature to be shown on The R&A YouTube channel, presenter George Harper Jnr is joined on screen by Toy and Garvey for a look back at their exciting encounter 12 months ago over the renowned links of Royal County Down in Northern Ireland.
Toy, of England, produced the best performance of her career to win the title, the now 22-year-old defeating Garvey by one hole in the 18-hole final.
Toy, a former R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament winner, became the first English player to claim success since Georgia Hall in 2013 and sealed a spot in the AIG Women’s British Open at Woburn last August by virtue of her triumph.
Looking back to her victory last June, Toy said, “It was amazing to win. I played really solidly all week. I stayed in the moment in the final and handled my nerves. I had been playing quite nicely at that point so to do it at Royal County Down was amazing.”
Toy, attached to Carlyon Bay Golf Club in Cornwall, let a chance slip at the 16th when she three-putted but made no mistake at the 17th hole from 20 feet for a crucial birdie.
A par at the last was good enough for victory as Toy joined a roll of honour that also includes Anna Nordqvist (2008) and Céline Boutier (2015).
Toy also ended Garvey’s hopes of becoming the first New Zealander since 1986 to claim the trophy.
Garvey, now 20, said, “I really wanted to win but playing in front of all those people and just getting to the final was a great thrill. That was my best achievement in golf so far and gave me a lot of confidence going forward.”
Keep an eye on The R&A’s social media platforms this week for the special feature with Toy and Garvey.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Women’s Amateur Championship has been rescheduled to 25-29 August.
