His route to the top may have been littered with obstacles, but Tom Lehman's perseverance paid off in style when he claimed the most prestigious prize in golf at the 125th Open.
In 1996, Lehman became the first American professional to lift the Claret Jug at Royal Lytham & St Annes with a performance that saw him set a 54-hole Open record.
That his victory came just weeks after missing out on the US Open title, having led going into that tournament's final round, made the triumph – his only major win – all the sweeter.
It was the highlight of a remarkable season for Lehman, who also topped that year's PGA Tour money list and would go on to rise to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking in 1997.
