In these challenging times, there never has been a better time to brush up on the Rules of Golf – irrespective of what level of a golfer you are.
With the global coronavirus pandemic affecting everyone’s daily lives, more of us have time at home to perhaps achieve a sound knowledge of the regulations that govern the playing of the sport.
Golf is a self-regulating game and it is the responsibility of all golfers to apply the Rules which provide the framework for the way it is played.
The R&A Rules Academy is an online resource for golfers of all levels and experience which provides an interesting and easy way to learn the basics of the Rules of Golf, culminating in an optional Level 1 exam.
Using diagrams, illustrations and videos, you can understand and test yourself with the most commonly occurring Rules situations – including, for example, how to take relief for an unplayable ball, what options are available when your ball is in a penalty area and what you can and cannot do in a bunker.
You can access all learning materials for free in the Rules Academy and work through them at your own pace, take the revision questions to test your understanding of the basics, and there is an official certificate for passing the exam.
A sound knowledge of the basics of the Rules will allow you to deal with situations you encounter most regularly on the course – and it may even save you a few key shots.
Grant Moir, Director of Rules at The R&A, said, “The Rules Academy is aimed at golfers of all abilities and is an ideal resource, especially for those at home just now looking to learn more about the Rules.
“Beginners, regular club golfers and elite players have all benefited from the Rules Academy since it was first launched in 2013. Some have even gone on to complete all three levels of The R&A’s Rules Education programme and now referee at various levels.
“For the last six years, the Ladies European Tour has required all of its rookie players to complete the programme to ensure they have a good understanding of the Rules.”
If you have an enforced lay-off from playing and watching golf at the present time, then take the time to explore the Rules Academy. It’s a good way to stay engaged with golf and it might help your game.
The Rules Academy is available in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic.
