Callaway Golf officials say their new Jaws MD5 wedges possess the “most aggressive grooves in golf,” thanks to a precision-milling process that gives them the sharpest edges and tightest tolerances Callaway has achieved – and results in improved feel and spin control.
Designer Roger Cleveland also incorporated the company’s proven Groove-in-Groove technology in these sticks. It features milled Micro-Positive grooves in the flat parts of the face for added surface roughness and grip. Three raised micro-ridges are added between each groove, and they are made to enhance grip to the cover of the golf ball, and increase spin on a variety of shots.
The Jaws MD5s are constructed from 8620 mild carbon steel, with the center of gravity of each one precisely placed. The heads of those wedges lofted from 46 to 52 degrees are slightly smaller when compared to those 54 degrees and higher, to create a natural shape progression from the short irons to the high-lofted wedges.
The new wedges are available in a pair of finishes: platinum chrome and tour grey. The stock shaft options include a True Temper Tour Issue 115 (steel) and a Project X Catalyst 80 (graphite). The stock grip is Lamkin’s UTX in black/blue. Loft options run from 46 to 64 degrees, and the wedges come in S-Grind (every loft), C-Grind (54, 56, 58 and 60 degrees), W-Grind (50 to 60 degrees) and X-Grind (58 and 60 degrees) as well as in a Low-Bounce W-Grind offering (of 58 and 60 degrees) that Cleveland created at the request of tour players in an effort to increase playability around the green while still allowing them to employ the sole’s entire bounce on full shots. To do that, he increased the sole taper and heel relief.
