Jorge Campillo won the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters on Sunday, defeating David Drysdale in a five-hole playoff at Education City Golf Club in Doha.
Campillo held a two-stroke lead with two holes to play, but he made a double bogey on the par-4 17th, dropping him into a tie at 13 under with Drysdale, with whom he was paired in the last threesome. The tournament went to a playoff after both players made par at the last.
Dane Jeff Winther, the third member of the final group, bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes and finished one stroke out of the playoff along with Swede Niklas Lemke and Finn Kalle Samooja.
As daylight began to fade, Campillo made a 20-foot birdie putt on the fifth extra hole, the par-4 18th. Drysdale missed from similar range after the pair had halved the 18th on four previous trips in the playoff, twice with birdies and twice with pars.
The victory was Campillo’s second on the European Tour, with his other coming at the 2019 Trophée Hassan II. His maiden victory came in his 229th start, but now the 33-year-old Spaniard has won in consecutive seasons.
“I’m just so proud right now of the way I played in the playoff,” Campillo said. “I hardly missed a shot and I was able to make some putts.
“I hit some good shots coming in in the middle of the round but you have to be patient, you have to try hard. I knew I was going to make some putts. It was a tough win but I’m glad I pulled it off.
“It’s a great par-4, (No.) 18. A tough hole. David was hitting some great shots into the hole and I had to make some putts. Three birdies out of six on 18 to win is something to be proud of.”
As for Drysdale, the 44-year-old Scot still is chasing his first European Tour victory after 498 starts. He has posted four runner-up finishes on the circuit and is a two-time winner on the Challenge Tour (in 2004 and 2006).
