Titleist’s new Vokey Design SM8 Wedges were made available for the first time at the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic in Georgia.
Master craftsman Bob Vokey, Vokey tour rep Aaron Dill and director of wedge research and design Kevin Tassistro were on site at Sea Island Resort working alongside Titleist’s tour reps, talking to players about the new SM8 wedges and fitting them into the best bounce and grind setups for their games.
The introduction of the new wedges follows months of testing which included trials of unmarked prototype wedges during practice rounds of PGA Tour events. Titleist sees validating product performance in this manner as a critical step in the development of all their new equipment and confirmed that the new wedges had been well received.
Titleist have not announced when the new Vokey SM8 wedges will be available to the public but if they follow their normal practice the launch is likely to be at the PGA Merchandise Show in Florida in late January.
The company also has remained tight-lipped about the design of the new wedges but it is clear there have been changes made to the backs of the clubs.
The new Vokey SM8 wedges are likely to replace the previous, hugely popular SM7 wedges, which were available in Tour Chrome, Brushed Steel, Jet Black and Raw finishes in lofts ranging from 46 to 62 degrees. The higher-lofted wedges had wider grooves which were said to repel sand and water more effectively. SM stands for spin milled, and the first SM models were introduced in 2007.
