PGA HOPE has become more than just a program for the Colorado Section. This initiative focuses on finding a renewed sense of purpose and community through golf – as coaches, Rob Grall, PGA, and Visanu Tongwarin, PGA, have seen the impact firsthand. They witness Veterans gaining confidence, building camaraderie, and overcoming challenges on and off the course.
“It’s life-changing,” Grall emphasizes. “Not just for them but for us, as well. Teaching golf becomes a gateway to teaching life skills — perseverance, teamwork and resilience.”
Grall and Tongwarin recognize that the golf atmosphere can be intimidating, and they are committed to providing continued support through downrange programs. The coaches also offer personalized support to help Veterans build confidence before joining larger group activities.
“Every interaction matters,” Tongwarin affirms. “We’re not just teaching a game; we’re fostering lasting relationships and want every Veteran we’ve taught to understand that they are our student for life.”
This dedication extends beyond the fairways through regular calls to Veterans, ensuring they stay connected and supported long after PGA HOPE.
Thomas Noonan, PGA, assisted in Grall’s most recent PGA HOPE program stressing the importance of looking ahead for these programs. “PGA HOPE isn’t just about the here and now,” he muses. “It’s about preparing for the future because we will continuously come across more Veterans to serve.”
In a world where conflicts arise, golf remains a beacon of hope and unity. As Grall concludes, “Golf is for everyone — it’s inclusive, therapeutic and enduring. Through PGA HOPE, we’re not just teaching golf; we’re nurturing a community, one swing at a time.”
The PGA HOPE program stands as a testament to the transformative power of sport, proving that the smallest swing can lead to the biggest change for Veterans and coaches alike. —Kika Dzoan

he 2024 PGA Indiana Open Championship concluded on July 10 on the Donald Ross Course at French Lick. After three days of play and challenging weather conditions, Michael Davan was crowned champion.
Round 2 began at the Pete Dye Course, known for its rugged terrain and steep elevation changes. Davan, who started with a low score of 66 from the Donald Ross Course, faced challenging afternoon conditions while aiming for a leader’s spot in the final round. His round was cut short by a storm, at which point Tournament Director Todd DeHaven decided to resume play the following morning.
With a 7:30 a.m. restart and an 11 a.m. final-round start time, Davan completed his second round with a 66 (10-under), and secured his spot to tee off in the lead group with a 7-stroke advantage playing against Peyton Snoeberger (3-under) and Eric Steger (3-under).
Davan started with a double bogey on hole No. 1, but birdied the second. He steadied himself with seven straight pars to finish the front nine. Steger made birdies on holes No. 2, 3 and 7 to close the gap, but lost momentum with bogeys on holes 10 and 11. Davan also bogeyed holes 10 and 14, but birdied hole 16. He entered the final hole with a four-shot lead and secured his third Indiana Open Championship win in six years with a double bogey.
Davan’s family was present, eagerly waiting to congratulate him. His son joined him to accept the PGA Indiana Championship Open Award.
Said Davan, who has transitioned to teaching at Plum Creek Golf Club in Carmel, “I played really well the first two days, picked targets and executed the shots I wanted.
To get this win when I have not been playing a ton this year is awesome.” —Renee Adam

She finished the two-round tournament with a score of 142 (2-under), followed by runners-up Haeri Lee and Nina McMurtrey at 144 (even).

While at Middle Tennessee, Walker also won six individual titles, leading the Blue Raiders to five team championships during her career. She ranked third nationally for individual tournaments won at the end of her collegiate career, and she owned every record in the school’s record book.
After multiple years on professional circuits, Taryn regained her amateur status in December 2022. Just a few months later, Walker won the KGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Walker showed no signs of slowing down, demonstrating that she still has the same fiery, competitive spirit that led her to so much success in the past. On the national level, Walker reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur in September of last year. Walker’s recent success serves as a warning to all amateur golfers: Taryn Walker is back like she never left. —Carter Hammond

Congratulations to MAPGA Associate Alex Hoffman for winning the 103rd Maryland Open at Talbot C.C. in Easton, Maryland. Hoffman, an Assistant Professional at Columbia C.C. (Chevy Chase, Maryland) survived a five-man playoff that lasted six holes.
Following rounds of 69-71-69 in intense heat, Hoffman found himself in a playoff with fellow MAPGA Associate Jon Moles, Philadelphia PGA Associate Zach Barbin, and amateurs Billy Peel (also from Columbia C.C.) and Charlie Bundy (William & Mary). Only Hoffman and Moles were able to par the tough 17th hole on the first playoff hole, reducing the playoff to two competitors.
Both PGA of America Associates parred 18 and then 17 again, and then both bogeyed 18 on the fourth playoff hole to keep the playoff going. They headed back to 18, and this time Moles made a 30-foot birdie, but Hoffman topped him from 25 feet! Incredibly, the playoff was still alive. The Maryland Open Champion was finally determined on the sixth playoff hole, when Hoffman made a two-putt par and Moles was unable to get up and down from the greenside bunker.
Alex took home $7,200 for the win. Special thanks to the MSGA for running a great event and to Talbot C.C. and PGA of America Professional Marc Kimminau for hosting. —Jon Guhl

Since 1992, the Nebraska PGA Section has conducted the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open alongside the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD). In addition to being one of the state’s top professional golf tournaments annually, the event has raised more than $1.9 million in college scholarships for students attending one of the five community college systems in the NPPD’s service territory.
The 2024 tournament will take place Sept. 12-15 at Elks Country Club in Columbus, Nebraska. The format for the event is a 54-hole stroke play competition with a purse of approximately $75,000.
In 2023, Florida’s Andrew McCain captured the event in a win that he hoped would “jump start” his professional career.
That’s what makes this event so special. Not only are surrounding communities and people of Nebraska being positively impacted by it, but the tournament is one of the best in the Midwest for competition. Past champions like current PGA TOUR Member Peter Malnati (2010, 2011) have turned victories in Columbus into victories worldwide on major tours.
The field is made up of both professional and amateur golfers from all over the world. Our 2022 champion, Harry Hillier of New Zealand, has turned his Nebraska Open victory into full status on the PGA Tour Americas and he even collected his first win on that tour back in May.
We are excited to host another loaded field at Elks Country Club, and look forward to crowning our 2024 champion. —Brett Renner

It’s hard to believe, but we’re already right around the corner from the New Jersey PGA Professional Championship on Sept. 10-12. This year marks the tournament’s 97th iteration, and it will be hosted by Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, New Jersey.
This marks the first time Echo Lake will host the NJPGA Professional Championship since 1969, when Section Hall of Famer Babe Lichardus shot 278 to take the title. Most recently, Echo Lake played host to the 43rd Fall Finale just last year, which was won by reigning Rolex Section Player of the Year and 2022 Section Champion Nick Bova, who will look to continue his success at the course.
Last year’s NJPGA Professional Championship winner, Brian Gaffney, will be attempting to make a run at back-to-back titles, which would make him the first to win two years in a row since Alex Beach managed the feat in 2016 and 2017.
Other names to keep an eye on this month include Grant Sturgeon, who has already won the Charity Clambake as well as the Head Professional Championship this year; Brent Paladino, who started the year hot with by winning the Match Play Championship; and Frank Esposito, last year’s runner up in the Section Championship who narrowly lost at Echo Lake in a playoff with Nick Bova in last year’s Fall Finale.
The top 11 finishers will also qualify for the national PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, next April.
Best of luck to all the players, and we’re looking forward to our best New Jersey PGA Professional Championship yet! —Mike Ferro
Fifty-nine: It’s a magical score in the game of golf that catches people’s attention. It’s safe to say Kyle Rodes of Kyle Rodes Golf did that when he shot 59 during the final round of the 2024 Mallard-Perez Stableford Championship at Esplanade Azario at Lakewood Ranch! This marked the course record and made for a special day for Rodes.
He started on the first hole during the shotgun start and got things going with a birdie on the par-4 first hole. He would make 13 birdies in the round, with seven on the front nine and six on the back. There were two incredible stretches where he carded four birdies in a row on holes 4-7 and 9-12. Kyle totaled 112 points in the modified Stableford format and won by 11 points.
“Winning the 2024 Mallard-Perez Stableford Championship against top players from the NFPGA is very special to me. I want to thank the sponsors, Esplanade Azario at Lakewood Ranch staff, and the NFPGA for making the event possible,” said Rodes. “I love to compete, but even more now because I’m competing for more than myself. I believe it’s crucial for me to stay in the heat of tournaments to keep learning valuable lessons to pass on to my students, and I’ll take away a lot from this event.
“Honestly, it’s hard to believe I shot 59. It’s rare in this game when everything is clicking at once, so it’s a special memory I’ll always cherish. I live by the mantra ‘nothing is given, everything is earned,’ and this victory has inspired me to continue working hard on my game and enjoying the journey of improvement.” —Brandon Roll, PGA

Golf has long been a tradition following the Section’s Summer Meeting in Reno, Nevada. After the membership was updated on the business of our Association, it was time for golf at Red Hawk Golf and Resort the following morning. The weather called for a warm day that nearly touched 100 degrees.
This didn’t stop the field from torching the course even more. Eric Costa, Kenny Collins, Tim Huber and Doug Hanson prevailed by shooting 52 (20-under). They did not post a 4 on the scorecard! Costa, Collins, Huber and Hanson eagled all four par 5s. They did have two pars on the card that dashed the dreams of a 49 watch.
Every year the scores inch closer to a team breaking 50 and we are getting closer. Congratulations again to Costa, Collins, Huber and Hanson for winning the 2024 4-Pro Scramble.
This event would not have been possible without our host PGA of America Professionals and Partners. Thank you to Red Hawk Golf and Resort for hosting us. Thank you to our partners Club Car, Caesars, ILT Vacations, VW Golf, Homestretch Golf, Tagmarshal, Maui Jim, Hole-in-One U.S.A, SCNS Sports Foods and Noteefy. —Shelby Zell

The WNYPGA Professional Championship at Clifton Springs Country Club on July 14-15 brought together the best WNYPGA of America Professionals to compete for top honors. The players arrived Sunday (Day 1) to a perfectly manicured layout and were quickly faced with hot, humid weather that provided difficult scoring conditions.
Managing the challenge the best on Day 1 was Tyler Smith from Oak Hill Country Club as his 1-under 70 led the way with seven players following closely behind. However, it was the consistent play of Nick Palladino, PGA, from Crag Burn Golf Club that would earn him the victory.
Palladino’s Day 1 even-par 71 followed by his 1-under 70 on Day 2 pushed him to the top by two strokes over PGA of America Professionals Jon Hoecker, Kirk Stauffer and J.A. Sutherland, who faced a playoff to determine the last qualifying spots. After a one-hole tiebreaker, Stauffer and Hoecker played their way into joining Palladino as the WNYPGA qualifiers for the 57th PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, in 2025.
“I tried my best to play smart and miss in places that gave me chances to make saves. Having no doubles and two eagles really helped my score,” said Palladino. “Both eagles were set up by hybrid shots. One from 266 yards to 5 feet; the other from 250 to 20 yards, and I knocked it in from the fairway.
“Having played with great competitors pushed me Day 1 to stay in it after a rough start of 3-over through seven. The energy and focus of my fellow professionals helped me continue to push myself and grind through the ups and downs of a WNYPGA major championship event.” —Mollie Mars
