Paul Broadhurst took control with a second round 8-under 64 and never looked back, winning the PGA Tour Champions PURE Insurance Championship in September at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Broadhurst, of England, would close with a final round 72 that included a closing birdie on 18 for a three-shot win and his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the year. In April, the 59-year-old captured the Invited Celebrity Classic outside Dallas.
“I didn't want to shoot over par and win,” said Broadhurst, who came in with a 54-hole total of 14-under 202. “My kids would be giving me stick. I was pleased to hole the last one.”
In the Pro-Junior competition, Nicole Iniakov and Daniel Ferguson won the Girls’ and Boys’ titles, respectively.
Iniakov, representing First Tee-Monterey County and paired with Ernie Els, finished at 23-under thanks in part to an unforgettable finish. In the final round, Iniakov, a Junior Tour of Northern California member, had a hole-in-one on the historic par-3 17th. A hole later on 18, Els made an eagle as the two shot 63 to win by four.
“There are so many people that came out to support me: my friends, my family and other kids from First Tee – Monterey County,” said Iniakov, a high school senior. “I’m going to remember this moment until I’m 80. I’m so grateful for everyone that made this tournament happen.”
Ferguson, a high school senior representing First Tee-Greater Dallas, played with Justin Leonard. The two finished at 19-under.
“Just to be here is incredible but to win it just feels amazing,” Ferguson said. “This week has been better than I ever could have dreamed.”
