The Club at Huntington Park is a popular public golf facility located in Shreveport, Louisiana. We have a proven 18-hole layout that offers golfers of all skill levels an enjoyable and challenging experience, and an expansive driving range where they can take lessons, practice and mingle with others. Beyond golf, we foster a friendly social environment where players can relax after a round and enjoy food, drinks and camaraderie, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors.
In the golf shop, 2025 was the best year in my 14 years as head professional and golf shop owner. With about 40,000 rounds per year, daily golf really drives our golf shop sales. We buy low (often bringing in closeouts at a discount) and sell high to maximize margins and profits, while leaving room for markdowns as needed. After all, most golfers don’t care if something was in a brand’s line this year or last year!
As a former sales representative for Greg Norman apparel and Ahead headwear, I understand that sales means knowing your customer, stocking merchandise and products they desire and building relationships with our golfers that do not just help facilitate the sales of a new driver today, but again in two years, perhaps with a couple of wedges, a golf shirt and a hat in between.
As the golf shop owner, golf shop turnover is my goal, so I am not averse to putting product on sale, as passing on those discounts to my customers who always like a good deal not only drives additional revenue today but also forges those vital relationships for tomorrow. I enable my golfers to go home and tell their spouse, “It was on sale!”
Having been on staff with Titleist for over 20 years, I am proud of our extensive fitting program that includes one full Titleist fitting day per month, where half a dozen golfers will secure their appointment and experience a thorough custom fitting from our skilled Titleist fitting representative. I host so many of these fitting events because they are productive. They help sell new clubs, provide a service and foster relationships that bring these golfers back year after year - new driver, irons, wedges and more! I also welcome Ping to the facility for a few fitting days each year, as the Phoenix-based company is also very popular in our area. With so many new golfers over the past 5-6 years, the game is really growing. I’d say that 80 percent of these fittings turn into sales in our golf shop, a great success ratio.
Back in the shop, I cater to our local juniors as well, selling not only junior clubs but also junior apparel and accessories — hats, socks, gloves, and shoes. We host two local high schools and two middle schools that practice and play at Huntington Park, as well as the city youth golf championship that welcomes upwards of 80 players annually.
As is the case at many other golf shops, league night generates revenue through golf shop credit awarded to our die-hard participants — 48 golfers who play a scramble format every Thursday evening.
Understanding that today’s golfer has more options than ever to buy their golf apparel, I logo our shirts, outerwear and headwear, differentiating my golf shop from every other option on the market. Although we are not a private club with a proud and dedicated membership, our golfers enjoy calling The Club at Huntington Park home and will pick up a shirt now and again to enjoy at our course or while perhaps walking the fairways of another local course, like our sister facility, Querbes Park Golf Course.
I stay on top of industry trends by visiting other golf shops to see what they’re carrying, watching what our current golfers are wearing when on the property and taking advantage of various other resources like my colleagues in the Gulf States PGA Section, publications like PGA Magazine and their Best Practice emails and chatting with my sales reps about trends they’re seeing out in the field.
