Dotch: Hermann Park Golf Course is a historic public golf facility located in Houston, Texas and is known for its challenging yet scenic layout within Hermann Park. As the PGA of America General Manager, my role involves overseeing all aspects of golf operations, ensuring excellent customer service, managing staff, maintaining course conditions and implementing strategic initiatives to enhance the overall experience for our patrons. I also focus on community involvement to engage, promote and provide avenues to bring people from within the community to the game of golf.
Dotch: My journey in the golf industry began over 32 years ago, starting as a junior golfer and later pursuing professional opportunities as a PGA of America and LPGA member. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to have family and mentors who have provided invaluable guidance and support, helping me navigate my journey in the golf industry. Their wisdom and insights have shaped my approach to leadership, management and personal development.
Dotch: Setting and measuring goals is a critical aspect of my role as a PGA of America General Manager. I believe in setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals that align with our mission and vision for Hermann Park Golf Course. Regularly tracking progress, recognizing when to adjust and adjusting strategies as needed are essential components of my goal-setting process.
Dotch: I believe the golf industry has witnessed several noticeable trends in recent years. One significant trend is the increasing emphasis on inclusivity and diversity, with initiatives aimed at welcoming more individuals, particularly women and youth, into the game. I can say here at Hermann Park Golf Course, we have had a large influx of new golfers. Our beginner golf clinics are full every week, and our girls’ golf program is the largest it has been. Hermann Park is a relatively shorter course, so we get a lot of beginners, seniors and juniors. Technological advancements, such as golf simulators and mobile apps, have also transformed the way golfers experience and engage with the sport.
Dotch: To be a more effective PGA of America General Manager, I've implemented several strategies focused on enhancing operational efficiency, promoting a positive work culture and elevating the overall guest experience at Hermann Park Golf Course. This includes investing in staff, creating activities and programs, implementing branding and marketing with social media to attract new players and leveraging technology to streamline processes and improve communication with patrons.
Dotch: For aspiring PGA of America General Managers, my advice would be to develop a diverse skill set in leadership, business acumen, customer service excellence and understanding of the golf industry. Seek out mentorship and networking opportunities within the PGA of America community, continuously strive for personal and professional growth and remain adaptable to the evolving landscape of the golf industry. Finally, always prioritize integrity, passion and a commitment to serving both your staff and your customers with the utmost dedication and professionalism.
