In recent years, the integration of innovative technology, like Toptracer systems, into public and private golf clubs has become a transformative trend. By enhancing the golfing experience with real-time data and interactive features, clubs are attracting a broader range of players, from beginners to seasoned pros. This shift not only fosters engagement but also encourages growth in membership and increased facility usage.
As clubs embrace these advancements, they are witnessing significant returns on investment, driving revenue and player satisfaction while establishing a modern, competitive edge in the ever-evolving golf landscape. In this installment of One Great Idea, we learn how PGA of America General Manager David Ford has embraced Toptracer at his facility, Kenmure Country Club in Flat Rock, North Carolina (a KemperSports property), and discover the impact made in only six short months.
David Ford’s journey in the golf industry began after serving eight years in the military, during which time he discovered a love for the sport. To pursue this passion, he attended the Golf Academy of the South, earning an associate’s degree in Golf Complex Operations, laying a solid foundation for a successful career.
In 1997, Ford launched that career as an assistant golf professional at Black Bear Golf Club in Eustis, Florida. Within two years, he was promoted to head golf professional and general manager. His proven leadership and operational skills led to his role as a multi-facility manager with GolfTrust of America, where he oversaw Black Bear Golf Club and Wekiva Golf Club. During this time, he diligently worked toward his PGA Membership, achieving Class A status in 2006. That year also marked a significant shift in his career, as he transitioned to private club management, taking on the responsibilities of director of golf and general manager at The Wildewood Club in Columbia, South Carolina and nearby Woodcreek Farms.
In 2008, Ford joined ClubCorp, where he further developed his expertise by serving as a general manager and later as a regional general manager. These experiences honed his skills in managing private club operations and delivering exceptional member experience.
Today, David Ford’s PGA journey is a testament to his military discipline, formal education and years of hands-on leadership. His commitment to creating thriving environments for golfers and club members has defined his successful career in the golf industry.
“As the general manager of Kenmure Country Club, I have always strived to enhance the golf experience for our members and guests,” Ford explains. “One of the most exciting initiatives we've implemented recently is Toptracer Range. When we embarked on this journey, our vision was clear: create a dynamic, inclusive amenity that elevates the golf experience for players of all skill levels.”
The Toptracer Range was designed not just as a practice facility but as a space that fosters a fun, engaging and technology-enhanced environment. Ford’s goal was to appeal to dedicated golfers and newcomers alike. They wanted to establish a welcoming environment where members could practice, compete or simply enjoy the social interaction.
“At the heart of this initiative is our purpose,” he adds, “to attract a broader audience and make our facility more accessible and appealing. We envisioned Toptracer as an alternative social gathering spot, perfect for casual outings, small groups and hosting events.”
Ford set several ambitious goals for the Toptracer Range:
“The design concept was equally important to us,” Ford says. “I wanted a modern, inviting and functional space that would seamlessly blend aesthetic appeal with operational efficiency. Comfort was key as we designed the area with spacious individual bays and comfortable seating, creating a lounge-like atmosphere that encourages socializing while enjoying the technology.”
Since they opened the Toptracer Range in June of 2024, the impact has far exceeded their expectations. They’ve added eight new Young Executive Members, an essential demographic for Kenmure, especially since the average age of their golf members is higher. Additionally, they’ve secured new range memberships and planned six golf tournaments for next year, all due to this addition.
“It's heartwarming to see families enjoying the facility together,” Ford concludes. “We've had great success running monthly closest-to-the-pin contests and weekly virtual golf tournaments, boosting usage rates at the range. Simply put, the Toptracer Range has proven to be a fantastic amenity for our club, and I'm genuinely excited about all the possibilities it brings for the future.”
