I have often thought that, when it comes to golf, I was born on the wrong side of the Atlantic. For me, golf is a walking game that is best played in conditions that require creativity and shot making. Well, after many years of dreaming, I will be joining a group of 32 golfers on the CGA-sponsored trip to southwest Ireland this month.
I can’t wait to see how my idea of authentic links golf aligns with my actual experience. I am also looking forward to tasting authentic Guiness!
The only downside of the trip is missing out on the CGA’s annual 100-Hole-Hike fundraiser for Youth on Course that will be held on Monday, September 23rd at CommonGround Golf Course.
But wait! Maybe I can have my Guiness and drink it too! Why not play 100 holes of golf in Ireland and share the experience with my golf friends to help raise money for this great cause that provides kids with $5 access to golf?! Granted I won’t be playing 100 holes on the same day, but I will more than make up for that by being 4,303 miles away and, quite likely, experiencing less than ideal weather!
The only wrinkle will be adding 10 holes to the five planned rounds (90 holes) currently scheduled at Lahinch, Tralee, Waterville, Ballybunion and Old Head. After a bit of “Googling” (that’s Gaelic for “searching the internet”) I found the perfect golf course—The 9-hole Lackabane Course at Killarney. The 3,015 Meter, 9 hole course is close to our hotel and popular among golfers of all ages and abilities. What a perfect place to play holes 91-99.
Okay, 99 bottles of Guiness on the wall—one to go!
Where will hole #100 be? Who will I play it with?
Only the leprechauns know! We will just have to wait and see…but if you want to find out, you can follow my journey on my 100-hole Irish Golf Hike HERE and if you want to support my efforts to raise money for Colorado Youth on Course, drop a “punt” into the wishing well.
Wish me the luck of the Irish!
