On February 1st the much-anticipated CommonGround Golf Course clubhouse remodel project was completed. The project was led by Roth Sheppard Architects and Saunders Construction and overseen by a very active group of CGA volunteers and staff. The project was managed by a CGA building project subcommittee chaired by CGA Secretary, Ty Holt. As an experienced construction attorney, Ty’s wealth of experience in construction provided the foundation (pun intended) for a successful project.
The project began in earnest in December of 2021 with the creation of the CGA building committee appointed by CGA President, Kent Moore. Ty Holt was asked to chair the committee, and in January of 2022, Roth Sheppard Architects was selected to oversee planning and design. Like a well-executed golf shot, success depends on patience and a good plan. The committee began the project with a series of design charettes to evaluate the entire CommonGround campus. This critical planning process provided context and helped inform the expansion and remodel of the clubhouse.
Once the campus vision was fully understood, the building committee engaged CGA and CommonGround staff in programming the new building and construction began in April 2023. The spring weather in May proved to be very uncooperative resulting in a delayed completion date. In fact, on Mother’s Day weekend, the 12th green at CommonGround was completely submerged in water and it wasn’t until 10 days later that the course was fully reopened.
Things improved through the summer as CommonGround staff established operations in a temporary clubhouse. Throughout the project, Roth Sheppard, Saunders, and the CGA building committee worked closely to ensure that the completed project would stand the test of time. To achieve this, getting it right was the priority, not rushing to meet a deadline.
The final result is spectacular! CommonGround golfers will be greeted with a brand-new building from ceiling to floor. Much of the expansion of the building was done to allow for more efficient operations. While customers may not move through all these new spaces, the expanded building will allow for elevated customer service. Here is what to expect:
This spring customers can expect to see new landscaping around the building as well as a new driving range structure which will house a new larger-capacity range ball machine with point-of-sale capability.
If you have not played CommonGround before, 2024 will be a great year to come out and take advantage of your CGA member discount. CGA members pay $57 during the week and $62 on weekends, which is discounted over 25% from our non-member rate.
In addition to our Tom Doak-designed championship course, CommonGround has one of the state’s largest all-grass driving ranges. If you want to work on your short game for only $10 you can play our Short Course with hole lengths ranging from 50 yards to 120 yards. Any good teacher will tell you that distance control inside 100 yards is one of the best ways to lower your handicap. Or maybe you just want to work on your putting? Our Community Putting Green is a great way to get that stroke tuned up for the season.
When CommonGround Golf Course was named in 2009 we didn’t just name a course. We declared a mission—A place for all the game teaches. Our new clubhouse is an exciting upgrade to that mission! Come out and see it for yourself…and stay for lunch in our new clubhouse!
