Every April since 1996, we’ve celebrated National Poetry Month, which has become the largest literary celebration in the world. But even before 1996, various organizations and states have tried giving Poetry a month. See if you can find any instances of earlier, different National Poetry Months.
Hint: You can use the Access World News with your library card to search old (and current) newspapers. On the site, go to Research, Popular Topics, Newspapers, and then Access World News. Just search by “National Poetry Month” (remember the quotation marks) and sort by oldest first.
National Library Week (NLW) is another annual observance in April. The American Library Association started sponsoring NLW in 1958, but the Denver Public Library has branches much older than that year. See if you can find a picture of the original Denver Public Library building in our digital archives.
Hint: You can search the Western History Digital Archives online at history.denverlibrary.org. Select search in the top right corner, then use the Digital Collections field–try searching central library carnegie to get started.
