Acclaimed as “#1 Best New York Attraction” by USA Today, Letchworth State Park, the “Grand Canyon of the East,” is where a 17-mile stretch of the Genesee River roars through the park’s gorge with three major waterfalls and cliffs as high as 600 feet surrounded by lush forests. Campers can take advantage of tent and trailer campsites, or cabins, a number of which are winterized. Find miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and biking, and check out the seven-mile gorge trail with jaw-dropping views at the overlooks. The well-stocked Trout Pond has an accessible pier allowing easy use along the shoreline. Additional amenities and activities at this family-friendly park include a swimming pool, new games area, playgrounds, athletic fields, festivals, cultural events, history and performing arts programs, guided walks, white-water rafting, kayaking, and for the intrepid camper, hot-air ballooning. Other highlights include the Humphrey Nature Center, William Pryor Letchworth Museum, Native American Council Grounds, the Glen Iris Inn and the ANT, the nation’s first nature trail specifically designed to address the sensory needs of those with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. When the weather gets cold, the park heats up. Visitors can enjoy winter activities including cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. For groups, there are special areas available to camp as well.
