➜ Governor Stephen Lewis of the Gila River Indian Community was recognized as Man of the Year at the 2019 Arizona American Indian Excellence in Leadership Awards. Governor Lewis is an advocate and strong supporter of AISES. At the same event Sheila Lopez, diversity program manager at the Intel Corporation and 2019 AISES Blazing Flame Award recipient, was honored as Volunteer of the Year for her work as an advocate for LGBTQ2S.
➜ University of Arkansas junior JohnDavid Lancaster has been awarded the Intel Growing the Legacy Scholarship through AISES. An electrical engineering major, he interned at Intel last summer. Lancaster is president of his AISES College Chapter.
➜ Former Board of Directors member Dr. Andre Cropper was honored with the 2019 Sunshine Award for Education and Technology. Dr. Cropper was recognized for his U.S. patent for the organic light-emitting diode (OLED), which facilitated the development of flat screens now used in a wide array of electronic devices. Presented by the SUNSHINE Awards Organization, the honor recognizes the achievements of people from Caribbean countries, Asia, Africa, Europe, Central and South America, and India. Dr. Cropper is from Trinidad and Tobago.
➜ Anna Quinlan has been awarded a $10,000 2019 Davidson Fellows Scholarship by the Davidson Institute for Talent Development. Only 20 students in the country are named Davidson Fellows each year based on completed projects that have the potential to benefit society. Quinlan’s project is an improved insulin pump for managing diabetes. A senior at Menlo-Atherton High School in northern California, Quinlan is headed to Stanford University. ➜ James Clarendon Watts III has been honored with a Student Volunteer Award, presented through a partnership between the Governor’s Office of Community Service and Montana Campus Compact affiliate schools. The award recognizes students who spend time volunteering while pursuing a degree. In addition to being involved in AISES, Watts is president of the Student Senate and American Indian Business Leaders at Blackfeet Community College and an active contributor to his tribal community.
