At the turn of the 20th century, immigrant and entrepreneur Fred Meyer was delivering coffee on horseback in Portland, Ore. By 1911 he could afford to open a modest grocery store, and eventually pioneered the concept of one-stop shopping in Fred Meyer superstores. His idea spread to eight Western states, creating wealth that upon his death in 1978 Meyer bequeathed to a charitable foundation in his name.
