When it comes to promoting health and safety programs in the workplace, UGI Utilities takes the responsibility seriously, with a structure in place to make sure employees never lose sight of the importance of safety. The Safety Day events held at its local offices are a key and popular part of the company’s practices.
To make sure all employees are represented by a committee attentive to the safety issues unique to their area, each Safety Day event is independently planned and scheduled by the 10 safety committees in each of UGI’s larger operating areas and in regions representing smaller operating areas.
According to Jill Walter, UGI’s director – operations South region, safety is a core value embedded in the company’s culture. To enhance that culture, Safety Days help increase engagement by reinforcing the company’s commitment to safety practices and providing employees an opportunity to rededicate themselves to safety.
She says the events aren’t just informative—they’re inspiring, too.
“Safety Days are my favorite events to attend at UGI,” Walter told American Gas. “The day allows us to take a pause and recommit to our safety culture while building relationships and camaraderie. It is inspiring to see, knowing the days are initiated, organized and hosted voluntarily by local employees who care about the safety of their co-workers.”
Each Safety Day includes activities and demonstrations applicable to employees, including speakers from local police departments sharing important de-escalation strategies to help deal with angry customers, CPR demonstrations, ergonomics presentations, and information sessions about preparing for emergencies at home and in the workplace.
While the dissemination of safety information is the goal, it’s far from a passive event. Employees also can inspect tools and equipment and participate in entertaining safety-themed activities, including ones that promote friendly competition like the “Backhoe Rodeo” operator course and other hands-on skills competitions.
