ho knew that southern sea otters can play a big role in reducing carbon emissions?
Thanks to a partnership between Georgia Natural Gas and the Georgia Aquarium, many of the aquarium’s visitors will know all about it via a new exhibit. It features interactive games where guests can earn carbon offsets by collecting sea urchins, or they can knock out carbon emissions within a time limit to save the kelp.
Visitors also learn how they can help protect the environment by making their natural gas usage carbon neutral with the Greener Life® program from GNG. For customers participating in this optional program, GNG uses U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards to calculate the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere from customers’ use of natural gas. GNG then purchases and retires carbon offsets to balance the impact of those customers’ emissions.
“Our sponsorship of the new interactive sea otter exhibit is a way for us to support the innovative work of the aquarium and highlight the important role sea otters play in reducing emissions in the ecosystem,” John Jamieson, senior vice president of retail operations at GNG, told American Gas. “We hope our leadership in sustainability will inspire other retail natural gas providers and utilities to join us in the important work of protecting our environment.”
The Greener Life program reached a program milestone of 100 million pounds of carbon emissions offset in June, equivalent to more than 110 million miles driven by a gas-powered passenger vehicle.
