Vermont residents now have convenient and affordable options to reduce their carbon footprints through the installation of heat pumps that pair with their natural gas systems. It’s all part of a program launched by Vermont Gas Systems.
The new residential program is built around a hybrid heating concept that utilizes a home’s existing ductwork. A smart thermostat integrates an electric heat pump with a natural gas furnace, using both to support the customers’ needs as the weather changes.
“The smart thermostat toggles between heat sources based upon the outdoor temperature and the user’s desired comfort setting,” Richard Donnelly, VGS’s director of energy innovation, told American Gas. “The hybrid approach also transforms a home’s existing ductwork into a distribution network for cool air in the summer.”
To qualify for the program, a customer needs to have a centrally ducted furnace that is at least 90% efficient, suitable ductwork, outdoor space where a heat pump can be located and electric service capacity. VGS applies rebates at the point of sale, processing incentives available through Vermont’s statewide energy efficiency utility and area electric utilities. VGS is also able to augment state and utility incentives through sales and leasing options. Ten-year leases start as low as $58 per month.
According to Donnelly, VGS vetted and piloted heat pump technology prior to the launch, and the program’s heat pump models are rated for high-efficiency operations in subzero temperatures.
“Even at 30-degree swap-over, it’s estimated a customer can cut their heating carbon footprint by 50%,” Donnelly said. “If a customer’s home is weatherized, they may be able to cut their heating carbon footprint by nearly 100% by setting the controls to primarily use the heat pump.”
Since announcing the program May 3, VGS reports strong demand.
“Our focus is to provide customers sustainable choices that reduce emissions without sacrificing comfort or reliability,” said Neale Lunderville, VGS president and CEO. “Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue to grow our portfolio of decarbonized products with cost-effective solutions that help fight climate change.”
