University West Village is a booming neighborhood on the University of California, Davis campus. When plans are complete (scheduled for August 2021), the 180 acres will encompass student, staff, and faculty housing along with educational and research facilities. The latest piece of this project to open is The Green at West Village, which has added 1,000 new student beds.
The Green comprises three new residential buildings that offer apartment-style living with full kitchens and common space in each unit and social lounges and study lounges on every floor. A utility building and several courtyards have also been finished, and before the entire project is complete there will be recreational fields as well as a 10,000-square-foot community center that will include a fitness center, multipurpose room, and support services.
Along with all the latest amenities, the new development is earning its moniker through a commitment to sustainable practices. According to the university’s housing website, The Green at West Village is one of the largest planned “zero-net-energy” projects in the United States. Its design calls for a system that generates more than 10-megawatts of solar electricity. Furthermore, it will support UC Davis’ first Energy Hub, which is home to the campus’s energy research centers. The Energy Hub is a prototype for campus sustainability efforts and is located in the commercial space that surrounds the Village Square.
