The students of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo started the new year with new housing options as the campus opened the Arcadia Flats Apartments. Designated for graduate students and upper-level undergraduates, Arcadia Flats Apartments will provide housing for about 353 students in a six-story building with 197 units. The new complex offers five room styles (loft, studio, two-bedroom studio, two-bedroom flat, and a two-bedroom flat designed for four people) as well as lounges, a laundry, and fitness center.
The Arcadia Flats Apartments were designed to take the place of Elmwood Apartments, which were built in 1954 and demolished in 2018, and the plan included a new student center (estimated to open in 2022) as well as other new housing options. “A few things excite me related to this new build,” says Steven Palmer, director of housing and residence life. “First is the fact that the university administration supported that this would be the first new build in the Hilltop Village project. This emphasizes the importance of housing and residence life as it relates to the future of Western Michigan University. Second is that this build offers a variety/mix of living styles and price points for our students.”
