Associations Focus on Wellness
ACUHO-I will join forces with more than 20 higher education associations to offer a week’s worth of free, virtual programs focused on staff wellness. The event, to be held February 26 – March 1, will increase awareness and advance knowledge to improve well-being among higher education professionals and move it beyond buzzword status.
“Well-being in Higher Education: Raising Literacy and Advancing the Conversation” will be a collaborative effort where participants will collectively engage with well-being content, brainstorm ideas, deepen relationships, and further their holistic understanding of well-being and its connection to student success. Learning outcomes include articulating why well-being is critical to the mission of higher education; understanding how each campus position is inherently a part of well-being work; describing aspects of well-being and differentiating between wellness and well-being; and identifying collaboration opportunities.
More details will be available on the ACUHO-I calendar in early February.
Speakers Highlight Conference Event
Registration is open for the 2024 edition of ACUHO-I’s Campus Home. LIVE! The annual conference and expo is scheduled for June 22-25 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Among the highlights will be featured speakers Jeff Selingo and Lorenzo Lewis, who will share insights that will shape the present and future mindset of the practice of student housing and take it to a higher level.
Selingo is an author, journalist, and higher education thought leader whose latest book is Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions. Named one of the 100 Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times, it looks behind the admissions curtain, details the factors that go into the selection process, and explains how choices often align with a campus’s priorities. He also spent 16 years with The Chronicle of Higher Education, including time as the publication’s editor. In addition, he is a special advisor for innovation and a professor of practice at Arizona State University, where he is the founding director of the Academy for Innovative Higher Education Leadership.
Lewis will detail his mental health advocacy and social entrepreneurship as he shares his unique story. Born in jail to an incarcerated mother, and struggling with depression and anxiety throughout his youth, Lewis has since dedicated himself to empowering others and fighting the stigma of mental illness. Among his many projects, he founded The Confess Project, a leading national grassroots movement that educates barbers to become mental health advocates for men of color. The project has trained more than 1,300 barbers in more than 20 cities.
Early registration rates end March 21, 2024. Visit the ACUHO-I website for more information on the conference program and events.
Volunteers Set Course for New Year
Each January, ACUHO-I hosts volunteer leaders for two days as part of the Volunteer Summit. During this time, attendees (primarily the chairs and chairs-elect of each committee and network) meet with Board members, staff, and other stakeholders to begin planning projects for the coming years. Sessions include a review of the ACUHO-I Strategic Plan and details of other initiatives, such as the Future of the Profession projects. These guidelines help direct efforts and identify opportunities for further engagement.
Members interested in learning more about projects and potentially joining one of the committees or networks are encouraged to contact staff or volunteer leaders. More details are available on the ACUHO-I website.
Annual Business Meeting Date Set
ACUHO-I President Gay Perez, past-President Leon McClinton, and ACUHO-I Chief Executive Officer Mary DeNiro will host the 2024 ACUHO-I Business Meeting on March 7 at 4 p.m. (Eastern).
The ACUHO-I Business Meeting is a chance to recap the previous year’s events and programs and look forward to what the coming year has in store. Along with a review of ACUHO-I finances, this year’s program will discuss the new ACUHO-I Strategic Plan, provide updates on the Higher Education Consortium for Student Affairs Certification, and detail highlights of the Future of the Profession initiative.
There is no charge for attendance, but registration is required. Watch for more details on the ACUHO-I website.
