While we can’t prevent winter storms, being prepared can help us to stay safe and protect our property when snow and ice storms hit. Organization also helps us ease the mental and emotional strain that come with a dangerous storm, because we know that we have what we need to get through.
Prepare Before the Storm
Advanced precaution can help to reduce our risk of injury or property damage during a storm. Check that you have everything on-hand that you might need if the power goes out for several days. Do you have enough non-perishable food and water for everyone in your home? Do you have what you might need to treat minor injuries if you can't leave home? Is your car equipped with everything you need in case of engine trouble or an accident during a storm? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself as you anticipate the winter season.
It is beneficial to assess your winter readiness in the fall before the weather arrives, and then review how you fared after the winter season is over. You might find that what you thought you'd need didn't line up with what you actually used. This will let you reassess your plan for the future, so that you make changes for the next winter season.

Decrease Your Risk
The number one goal to keep in mind regarding winter weather preparation is to reduce your risk as much as possible. Keep aware of incoming weather by using emergency notification systems and weather apps. Stay off the roads when winter storms are approaching and stay home as much as possible in the aftermath as well, when road conditions are unknown.
By doing our part to stay safe and reduce the strain on emergency responders, we can ensure that they are available for those in our community who most need their help.
