ADOBE STOCK
Coastal Carolina

Taking several days to enjoy the personality and hospitality of the unique communities in the Lowcountry of the Carolinas is an ideal way to travel. Maybe it’s the smell from salty marshes that casts a spell or a sugary buzz from the sweet tea, but there’s an undeniable draw that makes you want to linger on porches after twilight when traveling the North Carolina and South Carolina coast.
Aerial view of Charleston’s waterfront
Charleston to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
As you leave the historic and colorful city of Charleston between the Cooper and Ashley rivers, ride north through the lush Francis Marion National Forest. There isn't a view of the water from Ocean Highway, but you can stop at pristine state parks like Huntington Beach State Park for a break. Here, you can stroll the causeway to view the marsh and the wildlife that calls it home. If you arrive early, you can enjoy a wonderful sunrise on the park’s three-mile beach.
The area also has many distinctive seaside towns such as Georgetown, Pawleys Island or Murrells Inlet. You’ll find marsh walks, numerous waterfront restaurants and unique shops. Other activities include peaceful bike and walking paths, boat rentals and boat tours for viewing dolphins and sunsets.

Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is just a short walk from the beach
Myrtle Beach, S.C. to Wilmington, N.C.
Your arrival in Myrtle Beach is marked by the tourist kitsch for which the city is known—a mini-golf course and billboards with giant crabs hawking buffets. The Grand Strand has done much to update itself from the days of the Pavilion into a destination for upscale shopping, golf and entertainment, but “Restaurant Row” on Kings Highway is here to stay.
If you are okay with heights, take a whirl on the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel for panoramic views of the ocean, coastline and Carolina blue skies. Climate-controlled gondolas make it a great year-round option and the SkyWheel is fully accessible for wheelchairs and scooters. For shoppers, there are large malls, outdoor villages, outlet stores and unique boutiques. Key shopping areas include Coastal Grand Mall, outdoor villages like Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing, the upscale Market Common and the budget-friendly Tanger Outlets.
For another entertainment option, remember the good old days at the Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum. Capacity is limited, so buy entry tickets in advance for a classic arcade experience to test your skills and have lots of fun on the museum’s many games.
Planning your road trip adventure is exciting, especially when choosing the perfect vehicle. Whether you need a monthly rental or a one-way option, a Hertz rental can be a great option. It allows you to avoid putting miles on your own vehicle and choose a ride that fits your needs—whether it’s a fuel-efficient compact car or a mid-size SUV for extra luggage. AAA Members can reserve their Hertz vehicle through AAA and save up to 20% off base rates, get free additional drivers and other stackable savings. Learn more at AAA.com/CarRental.
Fort Fisher State Recreation Area
Wilmington to New Bern, N.C.
Wilmington features a mile-long Riverwalk and is a convenient location for day trips. Many visitors drive to Carolina Beach or Fort Fisher. At Fort Fisher, you can explore Civil War history at the historic site and museum or enjoy the natural surroundings on walking trails, by driving on the beach or by visiting the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. You’ll then head inland through the military enclave of Jacksonville en route to the colonial port city of New Bern on the Neuse River, which is a short ride from the communities of the Crystal Coast.
New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola, so be sure to visit the original pharmacy and enjoy a soda from the fountain. The city is also home to Tryon Palace, North Carolina’s first permanent capitol building from 1770 to 1794. Today the site operates as a museum and has 16 acres of beautiful, historic gardens. Guided tours are offered, as well as many events and special exhibits year-round.

New Bern to Beaufort, N.C.
The path to the Crystal Coast goes through Morehead City before arriving in pirate country. Beaufort is the site of Blackbeard’s 1718 shipwreck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, so pirate lore is a cottage industry in the Front Street shops. The North Carolina Maritime Museum houses artifacts from the shipwreck such as a cannon and medical tools. You can join a guided Ghost Walk or Pirate Walk to hear about pirate legends and the town’s past. The town’s annual Pirate Invasion takes place every November, transforming the seaport into a town overrun by pirates with street vendors, reenactments, music and more.
