With its vast stretch of spectacular spires set in the midst of central Oregon’s high desert, Smith Rock State Park is one of the world’s foremost rock climbing destinations, drawing enthusiasts of various abilities to climbing routes up basalt walls high above the Crooked River. The area also appeals to hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders or those who simply enjoy natural beauty while keeping watch for golden eagles, mule deer and river otters.

The area’s distinctive rock walls, born from volcanic activity begun 30 million years ago, include not only the park’s namesake Smith Rock, a 3,200-foot-high ridge with a sheer cliff face, but other geologic features such as Monkey Face, a 350-foot-tall spire with a primate-like visage, and the iron-rich Red Wall, which stands out from the rest with its shades of red and purple. The park, located near the communities of Redmond and Terrebonne, is open for day use, but also offers a campground for tent camping.
Smith Rock State Park offers 16 official trails for hiking and walking.
