While Tampa’s most famous beaches are located on nearby barrier islands, the city manages four official beaches along the shores of Tampa Bay:
● Ben T. Davis Beach stretches along the Courtney Campbell Causeway near Tampa International Airport. Located next to Whiskey Joe's, it's become a popular boating destination with Tampa's vibrant waterfront party atmosphere.
● Picnic Island Park attracts families with its sandy playground, boat ramp, disc golf course and separate dog beach.
● Cypress Point Park offers disc golf, playground facilities, sand volleyball, paddleboard rentals and walking trails in a neighborhood setting.
● Davis Islands Beach provides a dog-friendly option with Tampa city skyline views, though swimming conditions are limited.
Clearwater Beach sunset.
Two perennial favorites lead the pack with award-winning stature.
Known for its turquoise waters, Clearwater Beach gives off that bustling coastal vibe, with its famous Pier 60 sunset festival, street performers, and vendors. Located about 30 minutes west of Tampa via the Clearwater Memorial Causeway, metered parking averages $3 per hour. The beach buzzes with nightlife energy and beach bar events, making it perfect for those seeking both daytime relaxation and evening entertainment.
Further south, St. Pete Beach offers a mix of mom-and-pop businesses, casual and upscale eateries, and beachside fun ranging from playing volleyball and shell-seeking to jet skiing and swimming. The beach offers several craft breweries and legendary beach bars like Coconut Charlie's and Undertow, with lively nighttime and weekend crowds.

Fort De Soto Park stands out as a must-visit destination spanning five interconnected islands. Named among the top 10 beaches in 2024 by Dr. Beach, the park offers over seven miles of waterfront with almost three miles of beautiful white sandy beach. The park boasts a seven-mile paved trail, a historic Spanish-American War fort, camping facilities, and the area's only off-leash dog beach. Fort De Soto charges a nominal $6 parking fee (effective January 1, 2025).
Caladesi Island aerial.
For pure tranquility, head to Caladesi Island State Park, named the #4 Beach in the U.S. in 2023 and 2024 by Dr. Beach. This pristine island paradise has no mainland connection (access via ferry from Honeymoon Island), ensuring a serene environment with no development except restrooms and a snack bar. Rent a kayak to paddle through mangrove tunnels! Due to storm damage from Hurricane Helen, some island amenities are limited or not available, so check the park’s website for current information.
When you want a more secluded beach day, consider these nearby sandy escapes.
In Holiday, Anclote River Park offers a 300-foot beach with designated swimming and fishing areas, perfect for families and completely free. Meanwhile, the 95-acre Sand Key Park in Clearwater provides a great mix of beach views and family amenities with free entrance and $5 daily parking.
Just 30 minutes from downtown Tampa, Apollo Beach Preserve, serves as an excellent birdwatching destination on the Great Florida Birding Trail. Though swimming isn't allowed, it's perfect for peaceful walks, picnics and fishing.
Meanwhile, Treasure Island Beach (tucked between Clearwater and St. Pete Beaches) offers a perfect middle ground. It recently ranking #3 among Florida's best beaches in USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards and provides a relaxed atmosphere with easy access to dining and entertainment.
