FootJoy officials say that when they consulted with top PGA Tour players about making alterations to their acclaimed Pro/SL shoe, the feedback was overwhelming and clear: Don’t change a thing.
But that did not stop technicians from looking at ways to improve a product that was used by more of that circuit’s professionals than any other. And after some 18 months of designing and testing, the shoemaker released a next-generation version that it believes will take things to a different level.
“We didn’t just tweak or adjust the new Pro/SL,” says Richard Fryer, director of product management at FJ Footwear. “As a result, we’ve developed a product that delivers more stability, more traction, more comfort and more choice.”
The added stability and traction come from an all-new Infinity outsole configuration that features 189 points of traction made to provide a strong foundation through the golf swing as well as a shape that improves stability, thanks largely to a heel that is 11.5 percent wider.
With regard to comfort, that largely comes from a dual-density midsole that uses two levels of thickness of the company’s FineTuned Foam, with firm FTF around the perimeter for support and control, and softer FTF under the foot for maximum cushioning and comfort.
Fryer also lauds the addition of a Pro/SL Carbon to the line. This offering integrates a full-length carbon fiber insert into the midsole for more stability and motion control, due to the way the material flexes and elastically snaps back to its molded position with each step.
Pro/SL Carbon also comes with a soft-molded collar and cushioning that boasts an OrthoLite Impressions FitBed.
“I am someone who loves to be comfortable, and the new Pro/SL is the most comfortable golf shoe I have ever put on my feet,” says Louis Oosthuizen, a winner of several titles worldwide, including the 2010 Open Championship.
Adds fellow PGA Tour professional Charley Hoffman: “When I tried Carbon for the first time, I wanted to put them in play immediately.”
