Ten years ago this month, Fred Couples dazzled the golf world with a sterling performance at the 2010 Masters. It started with his firing an opening 66 to take the tournament lead. After a 75 on Friday, the then-50-year-old reeled off rounds of 68 and 70 to finish in sixth place. It was a performance for the ages, especially for a man of his age.
As good as his play was, however, Couples attracted almost as much attention for the Ecco Golf Street shoes he wore – and for the trend toward spikeless, hybrid footwear it initiated. And to commemorate that occasion, Ecco has re-released the Golf Street model that Couples donned for the 2010 Masters – and also brought out a limited-edition Golf Street 10 modeled after it.
The latest iteration of Golf Street, formally dubbed Golf Street Premiere, is available in the same four color patterns of the original, including the licorice/coffee/fanta combination that Couples had on his feet in 2010. The full-grain, pebbled napa leather uppers are water resistant and designed to be both durable and comfortable. And they sit atop an Ecco Dynamic Traction System outsole that boasts more than 800 traction angles for optimum grip.
With regards to the Golf Street 10, company officials describe that product as staying true to the core design of the original Golf Street (with the same E-DTS technology) while containing some enhancements. One of those is the use of a midsole material, phorene, which is made to increase shock absorption and rebound and elevate comfort to higher levels. In addition, the water-resistant, leather uppers come with bronze detailing on the eyelets and a Hybrid 10 logo on the heel. The shoe is packaged in a commemorative box and key ring and is available in one color – white.
The Golf Street 10 costs $230, while the Golf Street Premiere goes for $150.
