Rules official supports putter-length limit
Regarding the question of putter length, I completely agree it needs to be addressed (“It’s Your Honor: Limit the length of the putter,” March 16, GGP). From an official’s perspective, it is impossible to rule against anchoring in all but the extremely obvious situations. No official wants to embarrass a professional, or for that matter, any golfer by questioning their legal use of a putter. It puts both parties at odds. When it’s egregious, no concern … but in the great number of cases, it’s questionable. A rule change on putter length will resolve the potential conflict straightaway.
