‘Genuinely artificial’ Phil
What a great article about the real Phil Mickelson (“A scarlet letter on Phil’s legacy,” July 6, GGP). I played with several tour players at clubs in Florida that enlightened me years ago. Like millions of others I cheered for Phil on every shot as he rose to fame. Then the veneer began to peel away. As we said about some of my acquaintances in sports, he is “genuinely artificial.” Greg Norman and Alex Rodriguez are other examples.
As I told my friend Pete Rose years ago, “Admit your mistakes. Fans will forgive you. They love you.” His ego wouldn’t allow him to do it.
I have a medallion on my desk that says, “Stand Alone … Bare the Pain … Tell the Truth … Do What’s Right.”
I hope Phil can do that one day. Greg won’t, but Alex did.

‘Nail in a buried coffin’
Good piece (“A scarlet letter on Phil’s legacy,” July 6, GGP) and it’s hard to dispute the scarlet letter as the nail in the coffin. However, in my view, it’s a nail in a buried coffin. Phil was gone, done, over, hopefully never to be seen again after his LIV move and associated mouthing. I continue to be astounded by the leniency toward the LIV leavers like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm, etc. They have no business on the PGA Tour unless they want to forego 100 percent of their up-front funds from LIV.

Unfortunate deception
Two-word description: a fraud (“A scarlet letter on Phil’s legacy,” July 6, GGP).
Sorry for him, it all could have been different.

Memories resonate
Loved your touching article (“Magic Memories,” July 6, GGP). Brought back memories of playing with my son and grandson on the golf course I played countless times growing up. Those are priceless memories.
