First-time competitors Ryan Greer and Chas Narramore tallied 41 Stableford scoring points to win the Charlie Coe Invitational at Castle Pines Golf Club near Denver, Colorado. The duo from Knoxville, Tennessee, posted the round of the day (15 points) in a come-from-behind, 8-point win, beating 27 other mid-amateur teams in an event that honors one of the legendary names in the amateur game.
Chip Lutz and David Nelson signed for 18 points in the second round, setting up a Senior division romp. They tallied 34 points to win by nine in the 54-hole competition.
Two weeks ago, Tyler Strafaci was ranked No. 106 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. When he wakes up Wednesday morning, he may well find himself in the top 20, by virtue of consecutive wins on the abbreviated American summer amateur circuit.
After claiming the title at the prestigious North & South Amateur at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina the week before, he followed it with a win last week at the Palmetto Amateur. Strafaci shot 10-under-par 270 to post a one-shot victory at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina.
The victory enhanced Strafaci's chances to compete in the 2021 Walker Cup matches. He was named to the Walker Cup practice squad in 2018, but was not selected for the U.S. team that won at Royal Liverpool. Back-to-back wins this summer are sure to garner attention from the USGA's international team selection committee.
Strafaci will return to Georgia Tech as a senior this fall, should school resume. NCAA guidelines were adjusted to provide spring athletes an additional year of eligibility after the COVID-19 pandemic ended last season prematurely.
