Bob Royak won the Jones Cup Senior Invitational last Wednesday in St. Simons Island, Ga. Royak, the reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion from Alpharetta, Ga., posted a 54-hole total of 4-under-par 206 and finished one stroke ahead of Gene Elliott of West Des Moines, Iowa. Royak shot 68-67-71 at Sea Island Golf Club.
Royak entered the final round with four-stroke lead, but Elliott applied pressure down the stretch when he birdied Nos. 14, 16 and 17. Elliott needed a birdie on the last to have a chance to tie Royak, but both players finished with pars.
Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C., finished third at 2-under 208. Jack Larkin of Atlanta finished fourth, another shot back. Jerry Slagle of Southlake, Texas, and Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Ga., tied for fifth at 1 over.
Mark Weston of Windermere, Fla., won the super senior division title. Weston shot 70-71-71 for a 2-over 212 total and finished two strokes ahead of Allan Small of Savannah, Ga. Marc Fried of Solon, Ohio, finished third at 9-over 219.
