The newest iron line from Mizuno bears the MP-20 moniker, and company officials heap praise on the feel and performance of these sticks, which they describe as being “grain flow forged” in Hiroshima, Japan.
The MP-20 family includes three models: the MP-20, the MP-20 MMC (multi-metal construction) and the MP-20 HMB (for hot metal blade). The first of these is a classic, muscle-back blade that utilizes 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel with soft copper plating and nickel chrome. The result, Mizuno technicians aver, is “an impact sensation recognized as our purest ever.” The MMC version boasts a thinner top line and is engineered to be more playable through the use of a titanium muscle plate and a tungsten sole.
Then, there are the HMB clubs, described as “performance hybrid irons in a sharp ‘tour ready’ profile.”
“Most modern muscle backs and limited ‘tour edition’ irons can be traced back to the great Mizuno blades,” says David Llewellyn, the company's research and development director. “But what makes a Mizuno iron truly exceptional is everything you can’t see. If you could peel back the chrome plating, you would find a sandwich of nickel and soft copper before the grain flow forged (high-density) chassis. Under a microscope, you can see a perfect flow of grain within the steel from the hosel to the toe, compacted tighter in the hitting area.”
“Designers can mimic our lines. But not what’s inside.”
