For a PGA of America Section that has built its reputation on showing up for communities, measuring results and using golf as a force for positive change, winning a national award is recognition that validates an approach that’s making a big difference for golfers across New England.
The New England PGA Section has earned one of the PGA of America’s highest honors – the 2026 Herb Graffis Award – recognizing exceptional dedication to growing the game and advancing player development throughout its communities.
The honor celebrates outstanding commitment to participation growth, inclusion and community engagement. For the New England PGA Section, that recognition comes from delivering measurable impact through PGA REACH New England, the Section’s 501(c)(3) charitable foundation.
“This award is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the passion and purpose behind everything we do through PGA REACH New England,” says Michael Packard, PGA, Foundation Director. "Our professionals, volunteers and partners are deeply committed to using golf to positively impact lives, and this recognition validates the meaningful work happening across New England every day.”
Under the leadership of President Joanne Flynn, PGA, and Executive Director Mike Higgins, the Section reaches thousands of individuals annually through inclusive, community-based programs. The focus is clear: youth development, Veteran engagement, and welcoming new and diverse participants to golf.
The New England PGA Section has created accessible entry points for junior golfers throughout the region. Programs like the New England PGA Junior Tour, PGA Jr. League and Drive, Chip and Putt provide clear pathways for young players to develop their skills and passion for the game.
Another area where the New England PGA Section has truly distinguished itself is in Veteran engagement. The Section has emerged as a national leader in this space, developing multiple programs that use golf as a tool for rehabilitation, connection and overall well-being.
PGA HOPE New England stands at the forefront, offering Veterans a structured introduction to golf while providing a supportive community. OPERATION: PlayDay and the New England Veteran Series expand those opportunities, creating regular touchpoints for Veterans to engage with the game and with each other.
Perhaps most impactful is the Sets Fore Vets initiative, which removes one of the most basic barriers to entry by providing Veterans with golf clubs and equipment.
“Through PGA REACH New England, we are not just growing the game – we are creating opportunities, fostering inclusion and changing lives throughout the Northeast,” Higgins says.
These programs recognize golf’s unique capacity to support Veteran wellness. The game offers physical activity, time outdoors, social connection and a positive challenge – which contribute to successful transition and ongoing well-being.
The New England PGA Section’s dedication to inclusion also extends broadly. The Women’s Networking Summit and Series creates space for women in golf to connect and advance their careers. Plus, Special Olympics skills competitions ensure individuals with intellectual disabilities can experience golf in a supportive environment.
Strategic partnerships with educational institutions and community organizations amplify the Section’s reach. These collaborations bring golf into schools, community centers and other spaces where it might not otherwise be accessible.
What sets the New England PGA Section apart isn’t just the breadth of programming. It’s also the commitment to measurement and accountability. The Section strategically tracks participation, engagement and outcomes across all initiatives, ensuring programs deliver meaningful, sustainable impact. This data-driven ap proach allows for continuous im provement and demonstrates real results to stakeholders and supporters.
New England PGA Section leadership is quick to emphasize that the Herb Graffis Award represents a collective achievement. PGA of America Golf Professionals, staff, volunteers and community partners all play essential roles in bringing the Section’s mission to life.
“This honor belongs to our PGA of America Golf Professionals and partners who continuously show up for their communities,” Higgins says.
