Back in the spring, I wrote about how exciting 2025 was shaping up to be for our members and for amateur golf in Northern California. It did not disappoint.
We reopened Poppy Ridge at the end of May, and all signs indicate the project has been a resounding success. Thanks to the many hardworking people who ensured the outcome, our new shining star is now a tremendous member benefit and a top‑notch facility that players will enjoy again and again. Hopefully you’ve had the chance to tee it up on the reimagined course and are as pleased with the results as we are.
The summer was highlighted by national championships hosted here in Northern California. In August, the U.S. Amateur was contested at the iconic Olympic Club. We are especially proud of the many NCGA officials who supported and worked the event—particularly fellow Director Tyler Tharpe, who refereed the morning round of the final match. It was thrilling to watch the third‑youngest U.S. Amateur champion display such poise and control throughout the week.
Not long after, the 50th Walker Cup arrived at the “Cathedral of Golf”—Cypress Point Club. Aside from the final hour of competition, it was pure Chamber of Commerce weather all weekend. The only thing that shined brighter than Cypress Point was the commanding performance of the victorious U.S. Team.
As I write this, the U.S. Women’s Mid‑Amateur Championship is getting underway at the Dunes Course of Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Another historic venue, another thrilling week of competition, and congratulations are in order for all the women who qualified to play. I would be remiss not to recognize the tremendous efforts of the USGA in staging these events—well done! On behalf of our members and the NCGA, thank you to the USGA for your enduring partnership and support.
In September, five of us proudly represented the NCGA in the Evercore Silicon Valley Challenge, an outstanding event raising money for Bay Area charities. Everything came together for us that day, and we walked away with a victory and $50,000 for the NCGA Foundation!
Closer to home, more than 550 events have already been contested across Northern California this year, including our own NCGA Amateur Championships. Congratulations to all who competed, and especially to our champions. With nearly 100 events still on the calendar for the fourth quarter, there are opportunities waiting if you haven’t joined in yet. A big thank‑you goes to our operations team for managing the countless logistics that make these events possible.
As I reflect on this past year as NCGA President—and on my nine‑year term as a Director—I am filled with pride and gratitude. So much has been accomplished, and it has been an honor to serve. Whenever I meet others in the golf industry or chat on a course, I am proud to share my association with the NCGA, an organization highly respected nationwide not only for its tournaments but also for its food and beverage program and golf operations. These accolades reflect the efforts of our incredible staff and volunteers, who bring passion and dedication to every detail—whether as starters, in the pro shop, in the restaurant, or behind the scenes. They are the ones who truly “make the magic.”
As I near the end of my service, I am proud of the progress, grateful for the support of so many, and humbled by the friendships and relationships developed along the way. Golf is so much more than just a game—it is the people, the places and the experiences that make it unforgettable.
