Winds of Change Wins National Native Media Awards
For the third consecutive year Winds of Change magazine has been recognized with National Native Media awards by the Indigenous Journalists Association (formerly the Native American Journalists Association). The 2023 awards include a first place and an honorable mention in the Print/Online Best Environmental Coverage category and a second place in the Best Feature Story category.
Advancing Computer Science Education
AISES took part in an event designed to provide educators with best-practice strategies for teaching computer science skills to Native students. Tapping this discipline to support language and cultural preservation was part of the discussion. AISES teamed with the Computer Science Teachers Association and Google in Colorado to stage the event, which was part of the Grow with Google initiative. Held at Fort Lewis College, the occasion drew 170 educators from all grade levels across four states.
AISES Partners with STEMM Opportunity Alliance
AISES has joined a national effort to achieve equity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine spearheaded by the STEMM Opportunity Alliance. The alliance was launched in December 2022 at the White House Summit on STEMM Equity and Excellence.
Measuring Determinants of Success for Native People in STEM
A new grant of nearly $500,000 from the Spencer Foundation will enable AISES to expand important research on Indigenous STEM students. The project “Leveraging the AISES Archival Database: Mixed Methods Study on Native STEM Success” received funding over a three-year period. In partnership with researchers from TERC, an independent nonprofit focused on STEM education, AISES staff members will learn more about how the organization can best influence persistence and achievement in STEM fields. Previous funding helped establish a unique participant archival database going back more than 30 years, which will be used and expanded as part of this project.
