Despite racing just like everyone else the past two weekends, Joey Logano has done so under a much different set of circumstances than the other three drivers in the Championship 4. By virtue of winning the Round of 8 opener at Las Vegas, Logano punched an automatic ticket into the Championship 4 and has been able to spend the past two weekends pretty much on cruise control just waiting for the grand finale as his fellow title contenders went down to the wire battling it out for the remaining three spots.
Meanwhile, Logano’s No. 22 Team Penske bunch has been able to put all its efforts into making preparations for Sunday’s decisive event at Phoenix, where whoever among the four championship finalists takes the checkered flag first will be crowned champ. So does Logano and his team having the last couple of weeks to start looking ahead perhaps give them a leg up? Maybe not, but it certainly can’t hurt.
“I feel great about our chances,” said Logano, who scored his first Cup Series championship in 2018. “Honestly, I don't really care who else is in (the Championship 4). It’s about the 22 team winning a second title. That’s what it’s about. We just got to do our job and stay focused on us. We’ve had three weeks to think about our race car and how we want to play the race out, how we want to run practice. We’ve had the opportunity to really, really dive deep into Phoenix, so we’ll take that to our advantage and move on.”
