Sunday’s race at Darlington ended in heart-pounding fashion, with Joey Logano knocking race leader William Byron into the wall with just over a lap to go and going on to take the victory by a comfortable margin. Byron, who tumbled to 13th in the final running order, was none too pleased with Logano once all the dust settled. “He does this stuff all the time,” Byron said. “I've seen it with other guys. He drove in there 10 mph too fast, and with these Next Gen cars, he slammed me so hard it knocked the whole right side off the car and there was no way to make the corner. He can’t win a race, so he does it that way.”
Logano defended his move, however, claiming that Byron had similarly run into him just a few laps earlier. “Just an incredible race there at the end with William,” the Team Penske driver and 2018 Cup Series champion said. “I don’t know if he meant to get into me and fence me, but he did, and at that point, I felt like it was game on and was able to get back to him there the last few laps, pushing really hard, and I just knew that was my shot to win the thing, and I had to take it.”
Byron will get his shot at retaliation on Sunday at Kansas. Will he take it? Or will he attempt to put the final laps at Darlington in the past? Stay tuned.
