The final lap of Monday’s race at Dover turned rather contentious when Martin Truex Jr. and Ross Chastain made contact while battling for a position in the top five. Truex certainly got the worst end of deal, as his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota spun down the backstretch after Chastain’s No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet slid up in front of him in an attempt to throw a block and protect its position. Although Truex still salvaged a 12th-place finish at the Monster Mile, the 2017 Cup Series champ was none too pleased with how Chastain had raced him and made this displeasure known to Chastain while standing on pit road afterward.
While it’s not entirely clear what Truex said to Chastain, the veteran driver was clearly unhappy with how the final lap unfolded. Asked by FOX Sports in a televised interview about his post-race conversation with Truex, Chastain played coy. “We were talking about where we were going to go fishing next week,” he said with a smile. Of course, “next week” is actually Sunday’s race at Darlington, which provides a prime opportunity for Truex to exact a little payback on Chastain if he so desires.
So are these two drivers ready to put Dover behind them or will they tangle again? Stay tuned.
