Both Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano will likely need to go to Victory Lane this weekend at Kansas Speedway or the following weekend at Martinsville Speedway to be part of the Championship 4. While that sounds like a rather precarious position to be in, the good news is that Logano is a three-time winner at Kansas while Truex has been to Victory Lane twice at the 1.5-mile track. In fact, Logano’s most recent Kansas win here came in this race one year ago, so if history repeats itself, he has a prime opportunity ahead of him this weekend.
Last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, Logano finished 30th with a DNF after bowing out the race with a blown engine 36 laps from the finish. As big of a hit as it was to his championship aspirations — Logano is now last among the playoff drivers, 43 points behind the cutline — he knows it’s not over yet, especially with Kansas looming on the horizon this weekend. He’s also encouraged by the fact that his car was fast at Texas prior to the engine letting go.
“It helps us feel a little more confident,” Logano said. “I think Texas was probably one of the best 1.5-mile tracks we have had. It has been that way of late, making steady gains. We came back from the rear three times throughout the race. I’d like to know how we would be in points if we just picked it up and put it in a top-three spot. We have to move on. We can’t change it. We will be fighting from here.”
