Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott left Bristol Motor Speedway seething at one another last weekend after late-race contact between the two cut Elliott’s tire down and prompted Elliott – who later lost multiple laps during an unscheduled pit stop for new tires – to deliberately hold up Harvick, which allowed Elliott teammate Kyle Larson to pass Harvick and score the win.
Moments after the race ended, Harvick and Elliott engaged in a heated conversation on pit road where they also pushed and shoved a bit before eventually resuming the conversation in the NASCAR Cup Series garage and then retreating to Elliott’s No. 9 hauler in an attempt to hash out their differences. What did Harvick say to Elliott on pit road during the most animated portion of their exchange? “I told him I wanted to rip his freaking head off,” Harvick said bluntly.
It remains to be seen if Harvick and Elliott were able to work things out, but it’s quite possible the bad blood between them at Bristol could carry over to this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Race No. 1 of 3 in the Round of 12. “At some point, you’ve got to draw the line,” said Elliott – the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion – after his run-in with Harvick, a 21-year veteran of NASCAR’s top division. “I don’t care who he is or how long he’s been doing it. I’m going to stand up for myself and my team, and we’ll go on down the road.”
