With Kyle Busch’s victory on Sunday at Kansas, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season has now produced 10 different winners in the first 11 races (the only repeat winner being Martin Truex Jr.). Will this Sunday’s race at Darlington make it 11 out of 12?
Drivers who went to Victory Lane a season ago who have yet to triumph this season include reigning Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, 2014 Cup Series champion and nine-time 2020 winner Kevin Harvick, points leader Denny Hamlin, 2004 Cup champion Kurt Busch, 2018 Daytona 500 champion Austin Dillon and second-year Stewart-Haas Racing driver Cole Custer. As for which one of last year’s race winners still searching for a win in 2021 is most likely to break through this weekend at Darlington, look no further than Harvick. The SHR driver finished second last weekend at Kansas and owns three wins at Darlington, including most recently last fall.
“I think we all just want to win,” Harvick said, referring to himself and his SHR teammates. “You never know how the year is going to start. I think we’ve done a good job with everything that we have except for a couple weeks where we had some bad luck with flat tires, but some years start out good and you go like gangbusters and some years they don’t start out good and you have to figure it out. So that’s just part of the game. I’ve been around this for a long time, and you just keep grinding away, and, hopefully, eventually you pick it up. And if you don’t, you start over the next year.”
