No driver in the NASCAR Cup Series has a fan following like Chase Elliott, a winner of the sport’s most popular driver award in each of the past three years. Nowhere is Elliott more popular than Atlanta Motor Speedway, a track located less than two hours from his hometown of Dawsonville, Georgia, where he drove his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy through the streets and performed burnouts in the days after winning last year’s NASCAR Cup Series championship. Elliott has never won at Atlanta Motor Speedway, however, which is a stat he would love to change this weekend. Obviously, there’s no place he would rather win at more than Atlanta, given the track’s relatively close proximity to Dawsonville—the town where he not only grew up but also still calls home. “It’s always nice to go race in Atlanta,” Elliott said. “It’s a special place, and there's definitely a lot of fans around home, so I always enjoy going back. More than that, it's a fun racetrack to drive. I've enjoyed racing there from a driver standpoint, and I’m glad they didn't repave it.”
Elliott owns only one top-five finish but has four top 10s at AMS. His top five here was a fifth-place finish in 2017. Elliott is winless so far in 2021, his best finish being a second-place result in the season-opening Daytona 500. The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion came home fifth this past weekend at Phoenix Raceway.
