Mark DiLauro doesn’t have to think long to remember when he joined the Official NASCAR Members Club.
“I’m a charter member,” DiLauro said. Whenever they started it (2005), I was the first member.”
DiLauro recently shared his fondest memories of his experience.
“I was a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr. at the time. I was a fan of Dale Sr. for many years -- probably 35 years. I’ve had season tickets for 35 years at Michigan International Speedway, so I felt it was a great opportunity.”
“I was friends with an old German guy, and he asked if anybody wanted to see a race with him. I said, ‘Sure, I’ll go see a race.’ I loved it right away. I said, ‘This is my ticket from now on.’ He eventually died, so his son was my partner. His son passed away too, so now I’m the sole owner of the tickets.”
“I’ve gotten Hot Passes, and I’ve probably been through six or seven garage tours -- most of them at Michigan. I went to one at Daytona. The garage tours are the best. I won the ultimate package once. That included anything I wanted to do.”
“I sat in the drivers meetings, then I sat on the backsides during introductions. I got to shake a bunch of drivers’ hands, including Dale Jr. I got lots of autographs. After the race, we went to the winner’s circle. Anything you wanted to do that day, you could do it. I had a chaperone take me everywhere.”
