Martin Truex Jr. had a rough Daytona 500, finishing 25th after being caught up in an early-race crash, but the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion received good news just a few days earlier when Joe Gibbs Racing announced that he’s reached an extended agreement with the organization to continue driving JGR’s No. 19 Toyota Camry through at least 2022. The exact terms of Truex’s new deal were not disclosed. “Extending Martin’s agreement was a big priority for us,” team owner and founder Joe Gibbs said. “Martin brings so much to our organization. Obviously, he’s talented and shown he can win at any racetrack, but his insights also help to make all our teams better.” Now that the news has had several days to sink in, Truex should feel like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders as he heads back to Daytona this weekend to compete on the road course. “I’m happy to get this news out there so we can focus on this season and the future with Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Truex, a New Jersey native who owns 27 wins in NASCAR’s premier series. “This is where I wanted to be and to continue building on the success we have had together the past two years. I appreciate Coach (Joe Gibbs), my team, everyone at JGR and all of our partners like Bass Pro Shops, Auto-Owners Insurance, Reser’s Fine Foods, Stanley Black & Decker and Toyota for making this possible, and I look forward to continuing those relationships as we move forward.”
