Weekend getaways and golf are two activities that complement each other perfectly. The 2018 Texas Shamble, scheduled for Nov. 16-18 at Riverhill Country Club in scenic Kerrville, is an ideal pairing of the two. Best of all, we’re doing all the planning and scheduling for you. All you have to do is show up ready to have a good time.
The Texas Shamble is specifically aimed towards our TGA Members who are more interested in enjoying themselves versus what score they shoot. The relaxing annual get-together is a time for lovers of the game from all across the state to gather for a pleasant weekend of golf, friendship and merriment.
“The TGA conducts numerous tournaments throughout the year for competitive men, women and junior amateurs,” says Kelly Kilgo, TGA Senior Director of Membership Services. “The Texas Shamble is more laid back and less competitive. We don’t take ourselves too seriously because our main objective is just to get out there and have fun!”
With moderate temperatures and an abundance of natural beauty, there might not be a better place and better time to have fun than a mid-November trip to Kerrville and Riverhill Country Club.
Opened in 1974, Riverhill was designed by Byron Nelson and Joe Finger. Situated on a rolling piece of property with lakes, streams and elevated vantage points that provide views as far as the eye can see, Riverhill has consistently received high marks for its playability, scenic beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Complementing the thoroughly delightful course and first-class amenities is the club’s genial membership and staff, who go all out to make certain your visit to Riverhill is a truly memorable one.
If you’re not familiar with a two-person shamble style of play, it’s a tournament format which is both fun and inclusive for golfers of all skill levels. In a two-person shamble format, both players hit their tee shots and select the one best drive among the two. After selecting the optimal tee shot, each team member plays his or her own golf ball from that position into the hole.
The starting field for this year’s Texas Shamble will be limited to 50 teams and includes flights for men, women and mixed teams. A senior tee has been added for players that are 62 years and older. Teammates do not have to be from the same course, but both players must be TGA members.
Registration opens at 9 a.m. on Sept. 20. Entries are accepted as first come, first served. Teams hoping to ensure their spot in the starting field of this popular event should circle the date well in advance.
In addition to prizes awarded to top finishers in the Net and Gross Divisions in each flight, there will be a designated “prize hole” on both Saturday and Sunday.
“We are going to use a par-3 as our prize hole in both rounds,” Kilgo said. “Each player in the foursome hits his or her tee shot and the individual who is closest to the hole will win a prize. That way, we can have one winner in every foursome each day.”
The weekend will feature plenty of activities off the course, too. Riverhill will host a welcome reception for contestants on Friday night and an awards ceremony party after play on Sunday. Also included in the deal are nightly social events, food and drink tickets, contests and giveaways.
If this sounds like your idea of a good time, then grab a partner and come play in the Texas Shamble at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville from Nov. 16-18. The fun and friendship fostered at the Texas Shamble will be a tradition you’ll want to carry on for many years to come.
