Sawin Claims Second Stocker Cup Title

Competitive golf has been down John Sawin’s list of priorities in recent months, but that didn’t prevent him from winning his second Stocker Cup title on Saturday.

In the 54-hole tournament held at the Preserve Golf Club in Carmel, Calif., Sawin (above) shot 72-68-67 for a 207 total and finished one stroke ahead of Brian Blanchard, Jonas Mikals and Derek Meinhart. Sawin, who also won the tournament in 2013, came from behind on a day that began with 12 players within five strokes of the lead.

Sawin, a Bay Area standout, started a new position as vice president and director of golf at Pebble Beach earlier this year. And two months ago, Sawin and his wife welcomed their first child, a son named Harrison. Consequently, he hasn’t had much time to work on his game.

"I am in total shock,” Sawin said after winning. “I felt so unprepared for the tournament.”

Although he made two bogeys on the front nine during the final round, Sawin made three birdies going out. He followed up with an eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on the par-3 16th and finished on top despite three-putting from 50 feet for par on the par-5 17th.

In the team competition, Blanchard and Daniel Licursi shot a closing 64 to win the gross division by four shots. Sawin and partner Steve John finished second. In third was the father-son duo of Jason and Jack Anthony.

In the net team division, Meinhart and Alan Dunckel prevailed, finishing four strokes ahead of Blanchard and Licursi.
